Re: Our Support for AB 1634 The California Healthy Pets Act
Dear Mr. Eng:
We are the largest giant breed dog rescue in the world and we are in complete support for AB 1634 The California Healthy Pets Act. Every year, we rescue more than 1,000 giant breed dogs, while tens of thousands and more young, healthy, loving giant breed dogs are needlessly put to death. Millions of smaller breed dogs are also needlessly put to death as well.
The only people who are against AB 1634 The California Healthy Pets Act are the puppy mills and the exploitive backyard breeders who indiscriminately breed dogs until they die and produce thousands of puppies that will have no home, many of which are born with deformities. The puppy mills and the exploitive backyard breeders don’t care about animals or life itself. They care only about money. Many of these puppy mills and exploitive backyard breeders are members of "Breed Clubs" and have AKC registration making them seem "reputable." But, it is neither moral nor reputable to be mass breeding in a world where dogs are dying in shelters every day, regardless of whether their over bred dogs and puppies are AKC registered or not!
We at Gentle Giants Rescue hope that every committee member will see the great need for this new law. So many wonderful loving animals, most of them healthy young dogs and puppies, are dying in shelters every day because there are not enough homes. This is a continuing crime that you can stop by voting for this new legislation. We are in total support of this great first step in making a more humane world where we don't let immoral people keep breeding while innocent dogs’ lives are wasted every day.

Hopefully, we as concerned citizens and you as our elected representatives can unite together to get this wonderful bill passed and then add more teeth to it as time goes by to truly stop the puppy mills and the exploitive backyard breeders with "kennel licenses" to prevent over breeding. Even purebred dogs are in shelters in great numbers and their breeding should be very strictly regulated and far more limited than is currently the case. No one should be allowed to over breed while shelter dogs are dying every day. As a rescue that day to day suffers under the weight of too many dogs to save, we are here to help you in any way that we can, and we will make every effort to inspire the public to support the new laws, if you will enact them. We firmly believe that in a moral world, all breeding would be strictly regulated until every animal is ensured a good home for life!
The current cost to the State of California and the hundreds of animal shelters throughout the state is astronomical. Why should the people of California have to subsidize the selfish puppy mill breeders and the exploitive backyard breeders? These indiscriminate breeders should be required to support every dog for life that they can’t sell, or better yet, they should be put out of business altogether, because more than half of the puppies they produce die at a young age due to poor breeding or develop expensive eye, joint and other congenital problems that we and other rescues have to spend thousands of dollars annually to fix year after year, or they would spend their lives suffering just because of being poorly bred, not to mention breeding dogs with known illnesses and known aggression toward people and other animals. It is time for all people of conscience to stand together in support for AB 1634 The California Healthy Pets Act.
We fully support this bill, and we are willing to help in any way that we can.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
Sincerely, |
